No effort is ever lost

"No effort on the path of yoga is ever lost:
Even the abortive attempt is not wasted.
Even a little practice of this yoga will save you
from the terrible wheel of rebirth and death.”

The Bhagavad Gita II.40
This is very comforting to those of us who proceed earnestly and diligently on of what we think it
means to be a yogi and our current state of affairs.  We run a great risk of becoming disillusioned
    by our false expectations.

Let go your image of what enlightenment might be, thus allowing it to manifest in its true form It
may very well turn out to be different from what you expect.

The broader perspective on this idea, is the recognition that ideals, whether spiritual, political, or
personal can never be reached.  It's the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, or the uncountable
numbers that still persist on the thinnest sliver of the real number line. The fact that they cannot be
reached does not render them less worthy.  Rather, it amplifies the role of effort without
    attachment.
